Why Do I Need An Online Cloud Backup?
Computers have come a long way in the last few years and the need to backup seems to many, to be getting less important, why because computers are far more reliable then they have been previously.
So why do I need a cloud backup?
While it is true that computers have become far more reliable, new dangers have appeared in the last few years that mean that having an offsite backup is now probably more important than it has ever been in the past. The major issue that we have today is Ransomware, this is where a Trojan or a Virus is introduced to a computer, it encrypts files and locks the user out on their own data, the only way to get access to this information again is to pay a ransom, this is generally between $1500 to $2500 dollars US. Many people find paying a ransom to be just too expensive. There is also the risk of theft or fire and just plain old hard drive failure. Many think well I can just start again, believing lost information can just be redone, but what can be lost. What is often lost is files that you have spent many hours on creating and adding to over years of work, it may be an Excel spreadsheet with your customers, it could be your accounting file with all of your transactions or emails which have been sent out and received again over years, this is generally used by many businesses as their main store of information. Why are your online backups so cheap?
We do not like to think of ourselves as being cheap but rather, offering really good value for money. Unlike our competitors we do not have a large office or staff to maintain or pay, so in other words you get what you pay for. We could always charge more but we would feel we were doing our customers a disservice and in the long run that’s not good for anyone. We work from home but our systems are in the cloud, so because of that we can offer you a really good service and a great product at an exceptionally low price. We believe what we are providing is New Zealand’s best value cloud backup service.
How does your cloud backup work?
After we have received your order we will contact you by phone and arrange a time to install the software for you, we do this remotely with your permission. We then ascertain what programs you have, where the data is stored and ensure that the backup program is configured to include your relevant data. We discuss with you the best automated schedule and also setup the Management Service. Once we are happy we have everything we then start the first backup. The first backup may take several hours to complete. You can continue working but please do not turn off the computer until it is completed.
For larger businesses with dedicated servers we offer an online cloud backup image service which allows for recovery of hard drives this can be accessed both locally here in Nelson and also across the Internet.
What sort of Internet connection do I need if I don’t have fibre?
For MyBackup to work properly we need at least a VDSL connection with at least 20 Mb upload connection. For some customers who are still using ADSL we can under certain circumstances do a seed backup on-site and then cut you over to an incremental backup from then on. This can only be provided to certain areas in the Nelson – Marlborough region at this time.
I already have dropbox why do I need another backup program ?
Dropbox and other file synchronisation programs are very useful for distributing information and files to others, They differ from an online backup in the fact that MyBackup uses snapshot technology to make up to 90 incremental copies of your data. Also MyBackup runs in the background and is already pre-set up to backup your data automatically. You do not need to remember to make any further alterations to backup your data, you do not need to drag or drop files into a certain folder and because the online backup is done in the background as long as the computer is running your important files are stored on our servers.
How safe is my data ?
Your data is transmitted to our servers via a shared key, hashed SHA512. The data is encrypted and authenticated using AES-GCM, what that means is that your data is securely transmitted from your pc to our New Zealand servers. Our servers are replicated in real time so that your data is stored both here in New Zealand and also off-site, and offshore as well. This has been done so that we can ensure the data integrity and availability of your backups so that in worst case scenario short of a meteorite hitting New Zealand you will be able to access your information both reliably and easily.
What can we store in our backups?
Essentially anything that is valuable to you, if you are a photographer then it is for your photographs, if you are a draughtsman using CAD we can store your your CAD files, if you are a builder we can store store your plans, we can store your accounting databases, email files essentially anything that you need that you consider to be important to run your business. When we install the software we will make sure that what is important to you is saved. What we will not store is copyrighted material for which you do not own the copyright, objectionable material in any form and obviously if you are part of a terrorist organisation we would have some serious words.
Can I add extra backups ?
You have just been working over the weekend on some new documents for your business and your next scheduled backup is Tuesday. Can you add another backup now or do you have to wait for your next scheduled online backup. You can do a backup any time you like, on your desktop there is an icon labelled backup now just double-click on that and your backup will take place. We do not charge extra for this, as the whole goal of MyBackup is to ensure that your data is safe you can use this as many times as you like and there’s no extra charge.
How can I recover my data?
As part of your software installation we have included a PDF on step-by-step process of recovering data, if you need additional help please feel free to either ring or email us and we can help you over the phone, the first 10 minutes of this is free, and after that it is $35 per half hour. Generally we can sort out these problems in just a few minutes.
Do you do subscriptions?
We believe in open and free systems and as such we do not tie anybody into a subscription. You’re free to stay or free to leave according to your circumstances. The only thing that we require is if you want to leave that you please give us one months notice beforehand. We will hold your data on our servers one month after that date if you choose to recover it. We really don’t want to see you leave but we realise that circumstances change, businesses start, businesses finish and we want to be clear and transparent with all.
Do you offer a personal Backup service?
We are looking at offering a personal service in the very near future. Our packages will be starting from 10 GB and going to 20 GB. For as little as $7.95 per month. Please check our website to see when this will be available.
My backup is scheduled for today but it does not appear to have been completed?
At certain times of the day our servers are very busy and the backups are done on a first in first served basis sometimes that may mean that your backup client may have to wait for an additional 10 to 20 minutes but not to worry you’re in the queue and will be completed. The busy times for us will be from 9 am to 10 am in the mornings and between 3 pm and 5 pm and the afternoons the busiest day will be Friday between 3 pm and 5 pm. As long as your computer is turned on and connected to the Internet your backup will be done. If your backup is scheduled on a Friday between three and five pm and after five pm the backup does not appear to have completed please leave your computer on and once the backup is complete your computer will go into sleep mode. And enjoy your weekend.
How long will you store my information?
For our file-based customers we will store your information for up to one year or 90 incremental backups whichever comes first. After that your current backups will start replacing the oldest backups.
Do you have any horror stories – It would be nice to say that bad things only happen to someone else – unfortunately some I have known have been affected by disasters that an cloud backup would have saved them from … are you listening carefully then I will begin.
